"With my lovely midwife" |
"You are a midwife, assisting at someone else’s birth. Do good without show or fuss. Facilitate what is happening rather than what you think ought to be happening. If you must take the lead, lead so that the mother is helped, yet still free and in charge. When the baby is born, the mother will rightly say: 'We did it ourselves!'"
The Tao Te Ching
This is a sister site to my website Independent Midwifery in Devon. I have created it to support my midwifery clients and also to support pregnant women and parents with babies or young children in Devon and the surrounding areas. My wish is for you to easily find all the support you need during this important time in your lives.
The therapists who appear on these pages are either known to me personally or I have received glowing recommendations about them from my pregnant clients or from parents of young babies.
I have been passionate about birth for as long as I can remember. I am an advocate of instinctive birthing; the pregnant woman has deep within her all the knowledge she needs to respond appropriately to her birthing body and her baby within. An environment of trust, safety and support will help her to access her inner knowing and help her to surrender to the miracle of birth. Both mother and baby will be empowered by being supported to find the way that works for them.
I qualified as a midwife in 1980, then worked in small rural birthing units. In 1986 I began working as a community midwife and in 1990, when I was no longer able to provide continuity of care due to local NHS policies, I set up my independent midwifery practice. "I was blessed to have Julia as my independent midwife during my pregnancy. I'm sure that no one else could have supported me on such an intimate and sacred journey in the way that she did.”
